COPUOS

Also known as: Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space

📘 Definition
The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) is a UN body established in 1959 to govern the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity. It has two subcommittees: Scientific and Technical, and Legal. COPUOS developed all five UN space treaties, including the Outer Space Treaty. It produces voluntary guidelines on debris mitigation, long-term sustainability of space activities, and transparency measures. With 102 member states, it remains the primary international forum for space governance, though its consensus-based process can be slow.
