Satellites by Country

Which nations operate the most satellites? A ranking of spacefaring countries by active satellites and total objects in orbit.

The orbital environment is dominated by a handful of spacefaring nations, but the list of countries with satellites in orbit grows every year. Here is a ranking of the major players by approximate active satellite count.

Top Countries by Active Satellites

#CountryActive Satellites (approx.)Notes
1United States~10,000+Dominated by SpaceX Starlink (~9,800). Also NASA, NOAA, DoD, Planet Labs, etc.
2China~900+Rapidly growing. BeiDou navigation, Yaogan reconnaissance, Gaofen EO, Guowang and Qianfan constellations deploying.
3United Kingdom~760+Primarily OneWeb (incorporated in UK).
4Russia~200+GLONASS navigation, military surveillance, communications.
5Japan~100+QZSS navigation, ALOS Earth observation, communications.
6India~80+ISRO's NavIC, Cartosat EO, GSAT communications.
7European (ESA)~100+Galileo navigation, Copernicus Sentinel EO, science missions.
8Canada~50+Telesat, RADARSAT Earth observation.

Note: satellite "ownership" can be complex. A satellite may be built in one country, operated by a company registered in another, and launched from a third. Rankings vary depending on methodology.

Debris Responsibility

The countries with the longest spaceflight histories also bear responsibility for the most orbital debris. Russia, the United States, and China are responsible for the vast majority of tracked debris, both from decades of launches and from specific fragmentation events like the Chinese and Russian ASAT tests.
