📘 Definition
The Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space (1975) requires each launching state to maintain a national registry of space objects and to furnish information to the UN Secretary-General: the launching state, designator/registration number, date and location of launch, basic orbital parameters, and the general function of the object. This register — maintained by UNOOSA — enables identification of space objects, which is essential for applying the Liability Convention. The Registration Convention also establishes that the state of registry retains jurisdiction and control over the object and any personnel aboard it, wherever it may be.
