A Shortfall of Gravitas

Autonomous Spaceport Drone Ship (ASDS) · SpaceX

A Shortfall of Gravitas (ASOG) is SpaceX's newest autonomous spaceport drone ship, stationed at Port Canaveral on the US East Coast. Entering service in August 2021, ASOG dramatically increased SpaceX's landing capacity and enabled the company to support multiple Falcon 9 missions per week from the Atlantic. The vessel uses GPS-guided thrusters to maintain precise position at sea while a 25-tonne Falcon 9 first stage lands vertically on its deck.

Overview

ASOG was built from scratch rather than converted from an existing barge, making it SpaceX's most purpose-built drone ship. The vessel operates 300–650 km downrange from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, positioned along the booster's trajectory based on mission-specific fuel requirements.

After a successful landing, the autonomous Octagrabber robot secures the booster to the deck, and support vessel Bob or Doug escorts the drone ship back to port. The entire turnaround — from landing to port arrival and booster offloading — has been compressed to as little as 3–4 days, enabling SpaceX to maintain its aggressive launch cadence.

ASOG works alongside Just Read the Instructions (JRTI) on the East Coast, giving SpaceX two Atlantic drone ships to support back-to-back launches. On the West Coast, Of Course I Still Love You (OCISLY) handles landings for Vandenberg missions.
