Doug operates identically to her sister ship Bob — recovering payload fairing halves from the ocean and providing towing support for drone ships. The two vessels are named after the crew of the historic Demo-2 mission: Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley, who flew Crew Dragon to the ISS in May 2020.
Having two multi-purpose recovery ships allows SpaceX to support simultaneous operations — one vessel can be recovering fairings while the other tows a drone ship, critical for weeks with multiple launches from the East Coast.
