Overview

Rocket Lab contracted Bollinger Shipyards — the largest privately owned shipbuilder in the United States — to complete the build-out of its Neutron landing platform in July 2025. The platform is being constructed on a modified barge called Oceanus at Bollinger's facility in Amelia, Louisiana.

The design includes autonomous ground support equipment for processing the Neutron rocket after landing, blast shielding to protect on-deck equipment during the landing burn, and station-keeping thrusters to maintain precise position at sea — similar to SpaceX's drone ship approach but designed for Neutron's different landing profile.

Neutron is designed to deliver up to 13 tonnes to orbit before returning to Earth for propulsive landing on Return On Investment. The first Neutron flight (targeted Q4 2026) will not attempt recovery — landing on the platform is planned from the second mission onward.

The vessel is Jones Act compliant, meaning it can operate in US waters without foreign-flagged restrictions. It will be operated from the US East Coast to support launches from Cape Canaveral.
