Overview
BlackSky, headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, operates ~18 small Earth observation satellites in LEO. What distinguishes BlackSky from Planet Labs and Maxar is its focus on timeliness — up to 15 revisits per day with imagery delivered and AI-analysed within minutes via the Spectra platform. This "first-to-know" capability serves defence, intelligence, and time-critical commercial applications.
Spectra AI Platform
Spectra automatically detects changes, identifies objects (vehicles, ships, aircraft, construction), and generates alerts from raw imagery within minutes. It also ingests AIS, ADS-B, RF, social media, and news data for fused intelligence. This AI-first approach makes BlackSky a software company as much as a satellite operator. Defence & Intelligence
Primary customers are the US DoD and intelligence community via NRO's EOCL programme. BlackSky's rapid revisit and fast delivery serve military situational awareness — monitoring adversary activity, tracking movements, and battle damage assessment. Commercial customers include energy, insurance, and supply chain monitoring sectors.
Market Position
BlackSky sits between Planet Labs (daily global at 3m — "what changed everywhere") and Maxar (0.3m — "what does this look like in detail"). BlackSky's 1m/15× daily answers "what's happening right now." Gen-3 satellites in development will offer improved resolution and spectral coverage. Satellites launch on Electron and Falcon 9 rideshare.
